Chili Pepper Socks

After many years of knitting various vanilla sock patterns, I have put together my favorite aspects of these patterns into a perfect pair that works for me (Chili, size 8) and my hubby (Pepper, size 12). I’ve added this page as a quick reference for myself but feel free to give them a try!

LEG

Cast on 63 (70) stitches using 2.25 mm needles.

There will be nine (ten) pattern repeats of 7 stitches.  Divide stitches accordingly as evenly as possible onto whatever needles you are using trying not to divide within a pattern repeat.  If using:

  • a set of 4 double-pointed:  21-21-21
  • a set of 5 double-pointed:  14-21-14-14
  • 2 circulars:  28 – 35

Join stitches into a round using a cross-over join.  Slip the first cast-on stitch (it will be at the left needle tip) onto the right needle.  With the left needle, pick up the last cast-on stitch (now the second stitch on the right needle) and pass it over the top of the previously moved stitch and place it on the tip of the left needle.  The first and last stitches have traded places with each other.

Place a marker after the first stitch to indicate the beginning of the round.

Cuff:

*K1, p2, k2, p2; repeat from * to end of round. Repeat this round until cuff measures 1-1/2 (1-3/4) inches from beginning.

Leg

*K1, p1, k4, p1: repeat from * to end of round. Repeat this round until leg measures 7 (8) inches from cast on.

HEEL

Set up for working heel stitches.

Knit 16(18), turn, slip 1, purl across – 30 (34)stitches. Put remaining 32 (35) stitches on 2 dpns to be worked later for instep.

A Heel for Her– 31 heel stitches, 32 instep stitches.

A Heel for Him- 35 heel stitches, 35 instep stitches.

Eye of Partridge Heel Flap with 3-st Garter Edge:

Row 1 (RS): P3, *K1, sl 1 wyib, rep from * to last 4 sts, K4.

Row 2 (WS): K3, purl to end.

Row 3 (RS): P3, *sl 1 wyib, K1, rep from * to last 4 sts, sl1, K3.

Row 4 (WS): K3, purl to end.

Repeat rows 1-4 until your flap is 2.25″ (ladies 7 – 10) or 2 -3/8″ (10-12) Ending after knitting a wrong side.

Trapezoid Heel Turn:

Row 1: (RS) Slip 1, knit 17(19), ssk, k1, turn work.

Row 2: Slip 1, purl 6(6), p2tog, p1, turn.

Row 3: Slip 1, knit to 1 stitch before gap, ssk, k1, turn.

Row 4: Slip 1, purl to 1 stitch before gap, p2tog, p1, turn.

Repeat row 3 and row 4 until all stitches have been worked – 19 sts remain for hers 21 sts for his.

Gusset Decreases:

With needle 1, knit across 19 (21) heel sts, then pick up and knit 19 (23) sts along right garter edge of heel flap. Pick up an additional stitch on either side of heel/instep gap to close the tiresome gusset hole.

With needle 2 and needle 3, work 32 instep sts in ribbing pattern.

With needle 4, pick up 1 corner heel/instep sts, then pick up and knit tbl 19(23) sts along left garter edge of heel flap. Continue knitting across 9 (11)heel sts – 91 sts total.

Repositioning of Needle Stitches: Hers(His)

needle 1: starting at center of heel, knit 30 (33 )sts

needle 2: Knit 16 ( ) instep sts keeping in pattern

needle 3: Knit 16 ( ) instep sts keeping in pattern

needle 4: 29 (33 ) sts

Decreases:

Rnd 1: On Needle 1, knit to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1; on Needle 2 and Needle 3 knit in established instep pattern; on Needle 4, knit 1, ssk (slip, slip, knit), knit to end.

Rnd 2: On Needle 1, knit; on Needle 2 & 3 knit in established instep pattern; on Needle 4, knit.

Alternate these two rounds until you have 63 (70) sts.

  1. Well, I am going to start the “His” sock today! Wish me luck! And beautiful pick of little “J”. How fun… you know who will be next on your list of students…. after they saw her beautiful headband it’s been ALL they can think about!

  2. Becky, can you close the toe with the kirchner stitch? Don’t think I spelled that right, but you know what I mean?

  3. Love your blog! I am knitting the chili pepper socks for my husband. I am a bit confused on one point. On the eye of partridge heel flap, your instructions are to “repeat rows 1-4 until you can fold the heel flap evenly on the diagonal. ” that would indicate making the heel flap a square. Since my heel flap is 4+ inches wide, should I really repeat the rows until it is 4+ inches long? Seems too long to me. Thanks for any advice. I am knitting on size 1 needles with Patons Kroy Socks yarn. Roberta Brown
